VAR makes mistake during Chelsea draw with Everton

During the recent 0-0 draw between Chelsea and Everton at Goodison Park, a controversial incident involving Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford drew significant attention. In the first half, Pickford made a high-speed challenge on Chelsea's Malo Gusto, which many analysts believe warranted a penalty and possibly a red card. However, referee Chris Kavanagh and VAR official Graham Scott did not penalize Pickford for the challenge.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher commented on the incident, suggesting that Pickford's actions were reckless and comparable to those of an outfield player committing a foul. Gallagher noted that Pickford "leaps through the air" and only makes contact with the ball incidentally, implying that the challenge endangered Gusto.

Analysts Sue Smith and Stephen Warnock echoed Gallagher's sentiments. Smith described the challenge as "dangerous," asserting that Pickford was fortunate to avoid punishment. Warnock added that Pickford was "out of control" during the challenge, further supporting the view that disciplinary action should have been taken.

This incident has sparked debate over the consistency and effectiveness of VAR decisions in the Premier League, with critics arguing that such oversights undermine the technology's purpose of ensuring fair play.
