Chelsea face been banned from champions league next season....

Chelsea could face a ban from the Champions League next season if they finish in the top five of the Premier League, due to UEFA regulations on multi-club ownership.

Here's a breakdown of the situation:

 * Multi-Club Ownership: Chelsea's ownership group, BlueCo, also holds a controlling stake in French Ligue 1 club Strasbourg.

 * UEFA Rules: UEFA regulations prevent clubs under the same ownership from participating in the same UEFA competitions to protect the integrity of the tournaments. Specifically, Article 5.02 of UEFA's regulations prohibits two teams controlled by the same entity from competing in the same competition.

 * Chelsea's League Position: With three matches remaining in the Premier League season, Chelsea currently sits in fifth place. Due to the Premier League's coefficient score, finishing fifth would typically guarantee a spot in the next season's Champions League.

 * Potential Ban: If both Chelsea finish in a Champions League qualifying position and Strasbourg also qualify for the same competition (Strasbourg are currently sixth in Ligue 1 but close to the Champions League spots), UEFA could potentially bar one of them from participating.

 * UEFA's Stance: UEFA has been in discussions with BlueCo since January to find a solution that complies with their regulations.

 * Possible Solutions: One potential solution being discussed is for Strasbourg to be moved into a "blind trust" to remove any operational conflicts between the two clubs. UEFA would also likely prohibit any transfer dealings between Chelsea and Strasbourg if they both compete in the same UEFA competition.

 * Financial Fair Play: Separately, Chelsea have faced scrutiny regarding potential breaches of UEFA's Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules related to historical transactions under the previous owner. While they were fined by UEFA in the past, the current situation regarding a potential Champions League ban is primarily linked to the multi-club ownership issue, not directly to past FFP breaches. However, UEFA's general tightening of financial regulations could also play a role in their assessment of Chelsea's eligibility for European competitions.

In summary, while Chelsea are in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League based on their league standing, their participation could be jeopardized by UEFA's rules on multi-club ownership due to their owners also having a controlling stake in Strasbourg, who also have a chance of qualifying for the same competition. UEFA is currently in discussions with Chelsea's ownership to find a compliant solution.
