South Africa points deduction confirmed
Recent reports from late May 2025 indicate that the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) has accepted a three-point and three-goal deduction from FIFA. This deduction is due to fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in their 2-0 World Cup qualifiers win against Lesotho.
Mokoena had reportedly accumulated two yellow cards in previous matches, which should have led to a one-match suspension. Despite this, he played in the game against Lesotho.
While an official announcement from FIFA was still pending as of mid-May, sources within SAFA have indicated their acceptance of the penalty, acknowledging the error. This deduction will significantly impact South Africa's standing in their World Cup qualification group.
