Super Eagles and udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye banned from football
Super Eagles and Udinese goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, has been banned from football for two months due to illegal betting.
The ban comes after an investigation by Italian football authorities into suspicious betting activity during a Serie A match between Udinese and Lazio on March 11, 2024. Okoye received a yellow card for time-wasting in that game, and a surge of unusual bets on him getting booked was flagged, reportedly generating over €120,000 in winnings.
While there were initial fears that he could face a four-year ban for sporting fraud, the disciplinary commission ultimately found him guilty of the lesser charge of illegal betting.
The two-month suspension will begin on August 18, 2025, and he will miss Udinese's Coppa Italia match and the first six Serie A fixtures of the new season. He is expected to be eligible to return on October 19, 2025.
