Laurent Blanc, the 1998 World Cup–winning French defender and former manager of Paris Saint-Germain and the French national team, has been officially dismissed as head coach of Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. The decision was confirmed on 27 September 2025, only four matches into the new Saudi Pro League season. Blanc’s sacking came in the aftermath of a 2-0 defeat to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr, which left Al-Ittihad struggling to find form despite their star-studded squad.

Blanc had joined the Jeddah-based club in July 2024, replacing Nuno EspĂrito Santo. In his first season, he delivered immediate success, guiding Al-Ittihad to a domestic double – winning both the Saudi Pro League title and the King’s Cup. This achievement raised expectations that the club would dominate again in 2025–26. However, a slow start to the new campaign and mounting pressure from the board prompted a swift managerial change.

The club’s official statement praised Blanc’s past contributions but stressed the need for “a new technical vision to match the club’s ambitions.” In the interim, assistant coach Hassan Khalifa has been appointed caretaker manager while Al-Ittihad searches for a long-term successor.

Blanc’s dismissal highlights the high-stakes environment of Saudi football, where clubs backed by significant investment expect instant results, especially with international stars such as Karim Benzema and N’Golo KantĂ© in the squad. His departure also opens speculation over who will take charge next, with several high-profile European coaches reportedly being considered.

Overall, Blanc’s sacking underscores the increasingly short managerial lifespans in top-level football, where even trophy-winning managers face immediate scrutiny if early-season results disappoint.
