Here’s the real explanation from Eric Chelle (Nigeria’s head coach) on why we lost to Morocco — based on his post-match comments and analysis of the game:

🧠 1. The match was extremely tight

Nigeria and Morocco played a very cautious, defensive game that finished 0-0 after 120 minutes in the AFCON semifinal, forcing a penalty shootout. Morocco then won 4–2 on penalties to reach the final. 

🏃‍♂️ 2. Nigeria didn’t play as well technically or physically

Chelle said the team was not at the same technical level as in earlier matches — lacking the usual movement, power and dynamic play needed to break down Morocco’s defence. He wouldn’t pin it solely on fatigue but acknowledged the team fell short in intensity. 

“From a technical point of view, we were not at the level we showed in other matches… we lacked movement and power.” 

🪄 3. Tactical approach was cautious and intense

Eric Chelle chose an aggressive pressing style to disrupt Morocco early, but that strategy also demanded a lot physically and didn’t produce many clear chances. Nigeria fought for every ball, but that high press didn’t translate into goals.

After 120 minutes with no goals, it came down to spot-kicks. Morocco converted four penalties and their keeper Yassine Bounou saved two Nigerian penalties — including from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi — which ultimately decided the game. 

Chelle defended his choice of penalty takers, saying decisions were based on training performance and statistics.
